One of Lancashire’s brightest young rugby talents has signed for Fylde to test himself at National League level in the coming 2025-26 campaign. Will Greenwood is a proud son of Garstang Rugby Club and has progressed steadily through Lancashire’s age group development system. He’s now skipper of the County’s U’20s team and led them proudly to a 36-22 victory on Saturday at the Allianz Twickenham Stadium in the Final of the County Championship U’20s tournament against Devon. On top of everything else he picked up the Man of the Match award! Will also made his full senior Lancashire debut in 2024-25 with appearances v Somerset and then Yorkshire in the Bill Beaumont County Championship.
Saturday’s game was his 10th Lancashire U’20s cap. The 6’4″ & 105kg lock forward has also been announced as co-captain of the North of England U’20s and represented the North last season. His leadership potential, even at such a young age, was recognised in the season just ending by being chosen as the youngest ever 1st XV skipper of Garstang.
Will pays tribute to many people who have helped his rugby development, “especially the great coaching set-up at Hudson Park. This includes Sam Dugdale, Olly Viney, Alex Keay and Mark Sutcliffe and a big support network who have all helped me in my rugby career.”
His senior playing career at club level has consisted of 47 1st XV appearances for Garstang who compete in the Northern Division competition.
Will was a student at Garstang Community Academy and then moved on to Cardinal Newman College. He is now enrolled on a University of Cumbria BSc degree apprenticeship with a role at BAE Systems as a Project Manager (2024-29).
Of his move to the Woodlands club, Will said: “I am really excited and honoured to join Fylde and give rugby a shot at National League level. I’ve been in contact with Fylde for a couple of seasons now, so I am looking forward to getting going and getting stuck in at pre-season!”
