One of the several new players who showed up well against Rossendale last Saturday was Alex Gaughan who came on as replacement scrum-half in the 2nd half and scored two late tries. Few Fylde followers will know much about Alex so we caught up with him after the match.
Alex grew up in Ormskirk and went to school in the town. At Ormskirk 6th Form he became Head Boy but by that time had already caught the rugby bug at Ormskirk RUFC. He went on to study at Edge Hill University and eventually joined Caldy RUFC and then a brief spell at Waterloo.
He’s had numerous influential people pushing and inspiring him in his rugby career like his father and his team mates as well as all of his coaches from his previous clubs. He added: “However, a big inspiration for me was my first seniors coach, James Smith. He made me into a scrum half and has helped me through my rugby journey. He was an ex-Caldy and Preston Grasshopper player, but has always pushed for me to try and play higher ever since I started playing seniors at Ormskirk.
“It was James and my coaches at Waterloo who actually suggested pushing for Fylde. James then contacted Chris Briers who later invited me down to training.
“I feel that the club has a great and positive atmosphere and all the lads have been really welcoming. The training is intense and it’s good because all of the lads are on the same page in terms of progressing and getting better. I’m very much looking forward to the season with this team and Club!”
Alex’s day job is as a PE teacher.
