Sedgley Park Senior Colts vs Fylde Senior Colts, 2nd February 2025
Sedgley Park 20 – 57 Fylde Senior Colts: report by Ben Curran
Fylde Senior Colts delivered a dominant away performance, securing an emphatic 57-20 victory over Sedgley Park. A fast-paced and clinical attacking display saw Fylde take control of large parts of the game, capitalising on opportunities and maintaining composure under pressure.
The opening 15 minutes saw Fylde camped deep in Sedgley’s half, applying relentless pressure. The breakthrough came on 14 minutes, when lock Lucas McCarthy powered over from a pick-and-go after sustained forward pressure. Full-back Corey Morgan added the extras to give Fylde an early lead (0-7).
Sedgley responded at 19 minutes, using their forward pack to drive over from a maul, but the conversion attempt was off target (5-7).
Just two minutes later, Fylde struck again. With Sedgley attempting to play from their own lineout under pressure, Tommy McGuirk intercepted a loose pass inside the opposition 22 and raced over for a try. Corey Morgan converted to extend Fylde’s lead (5-14).
Fylde’s aggressive defensive pressure paid off again at 24 minutes, when Sedgley overthrew a lineout. Scrum-half Sam Curran reacted quickest, scooping up the loose ball, skipping past a defender, and darting over. Corey Morgan added the conversion (5-21).
Sedgley responded in the 29th minute, once again using their powerful maul as a platform. A breakaway by their flanker saw them crash over—despite strong claims of a triple movement being missed. The conversion was again unsuccessful (10-21).
Fylde maintained their attacking momentum, and at 32 minutes, No. 8 Jasper Sykes ran a perfect line off fly-half Toby Curran, slicing through Sedgley’s defence to touch down. Corey Morgan added another successful conversion (10-28).
Sedgley kept themselves in the contest with a try at 38 minutes, but their struggles from the tee persisted, leaving the score at 15-28 going into half-time.
The second half began with Fylde ramping up the pressure. At 42 minutes, Sedgley struggled to clear their lines, and Fylde charging down the kick, leading to a rapid attacking move with Elliott Swann shifting the ball to Ethan Brown, who offloaded to Jake Rae, finishing well in the left corner. Corey Morgan slotted the difficult conversion (15-35).
Fylde’s confidence grew, and at 50 minutes, they produced one of the tries of the match. Fly-half Toby Curran executed a pinpoint cross-field kick for Tommy McGuirk, who regathered beautifully before flicking a no-look pass to Full-back Corey Morgan, who dived over. Morgan converted his own try (15-42).
Sedgley responded at 55 minutes, eventually finding a way through after five consecutive tap-and-go penalties. With Fylde risking a yellow card for repeated offsides, Sedgley crashed over, but the conversion was once again off target (20-42).
At 62 minutes, Fylde hit back in style. Following another Sedgley kick infield, Ethan Brown gathered and kicked ahead for Tommy McGuirk to chase. Although he momentarily lost control, the ball bounced kindly for Ethan Brown, who regathered and dotted down. Corey Morgan’s conversion attempt drifted wide, leaving the score at 20-47.
Four minutes later, Sedgley were caught offside on their 40-metre line, and Corey Morgan, in excellent form, calmly slotted the penalty to take Fylde past 50 points (20-50).
The final score of the match came at 69 minutes, when Fylde once again built pressure inside Sedgley’s 22. From a breakdown, fly-half Toby Curran threw a well-executed double miss pass, finding tighthead prop George Squires, who bulldozed through three defenders to score under the posts. Corey Morgan added the simple conversion, sealing a dominant performance at 20-57.
Match Analysis
Fylde’s attacking fluidity and relentless defensive pressure set the tone for a comprehensive victory. The forwards provided a strong platform, competing well at the breakdown and disrupting Sedgley’s set-piece, while the backs executed well-structured plays, including an impressive cross-field kick try and a well-worked charge-down score.
Corey Morgan was outstanding from the tee, converting eight out of nine kicks, adding a penalty, and scoring his own try to take his daily personal tally to 22 points.
The brother pairings in the squad played a key role in the performance, with the Curran brothers (Toby and Sam) dictating play at 9 and 10, combining well to control the tempo. Meanwhile, the Graham brothers (Freddie and Vinnie) brought aggression and physicality in the front five, making a real impact at the set-piece and in open play. Tommy McGuirk and Ethan Brown also offered a constant attacking threat, both contributing crucial moments in the game.
While Fylde conceded 20 points, much of that came from Sedgley’s powerful forward play and persistence with their maul. However, discipline remains an area for improvement, with repeated infringements at the breakdown almost leading to a yellow card.
Conclusion
A strong away performance from Fylde Senior Colts, showcasing their attacking quality and ability to turn defence into attack. With confidence high following back-to-back wins, the squad will look to carry this momentum into their upcoming fixtures.
Credit to Sedgley Park, who fought hard and used their forward dominance effectively, particularly at the maul. Despite the final scoreline, they remained competitive throughout. We wish them the best for the rest of the season.

Team Manager Ben Curran added this comment:
“Looking Ahead
Fylde now turn their attention to next Sunday’s home fixture against Anselmians (KO 2pm, Sunday 11th February).
The teams last met on the opening weekend of the season (8th September), where Fylde edged a hard-fought 12-8 victory away from home.
Anselmians currently sit 2nd in the table and will pose a strong challenge, but with confidence high and momentum on their side, Fylde will be looking to complete the double and continue their winning run.”
