We open our news feed of 1st XV squad changes for the 2023-24 season with a very welcome return to the Club of flanker Valu Tanē Bentley.
Tanē was born in France in 2003 and moved with his family to the UK at the age of six. He has impressive antecedents and rugby DNA. His father, Valu Jack Bentley, who is from NZ and who has had a massive influence on his son’s rugby career, played professional rugby league in France and finished his career in the UK. So Tanē comes from a big rugby league family who have all played at both a professional and international level. Tanē was initially at Wigan Warriors Academy for two years before changing codes and moving to Sale Sharks Academy for four years whilst simultaneously studying at Kirkham Grammar School.
He joined Fylde directly from Kirkham Grammar School’s 6th Form for the 2021-22 season and made six 1st XV National League appearances in his favoured open side flanker position as well as numerous games for the Hawks. His league debut was spectacular as he scored three fine tries in Fylde’s 80-26 victory against Harrogate at the Woodlands. He demonstrated his acute pace, ball handling and fine support running.
Tanē moved on to Sedgley Park for the 2022-23 campaign and in a very competitive squad forced his way into the 1st XV and made 20 appearances in Sedge’s championship season. His progress was recognised by Lancashire selectors and he made his senior county championship debut in the Red Roses’ 2023 campaign.

Valu Tanē Bentley said: “After a year out at Sedgley Park I’m really happy and excited to come back to Fylde. Over the past year I have gained more experience and become a more mature player.
“The opportunity to come back to Fylde was down to Lono. After representing Lancashire, with him as our coach, some good performances, bonding with the boys the talks naturally flowed to next season. It was then we discussed a comeback to the Woodlands. I’m looking forward to being coached by Lono and Briersy as it’s going to be a great opportunity for my development as a player.
“Last year with Sedgley Park it was a great season including gaining promotion but I feel like this year I have lot more to learn and loads more to give in the National 2 North League. I can’t wait to rip in with the boys and see how far we can go! Let’s Get It!”
Welcome back Tanē!
