Macclesfield RUFC Senior Colts vs Fylde RUFC Senior Colts
Match Report by Ben Curran
(Final Score: Macclesfield 29 – Fylde 10)
The Fylde Senior Colts endured a tough outing in their away fixture against Macclesfield, ultimately succumbing to a 29-10 defeat. Despite a much-improved second-half performance, an error-prone and sluggish start left them with too much ground to make up.
Macclesfield came out of the blocks at pace, capitalizing on early lapses in Fylde’s defence. The home side’s fly-half made his presence felt immediately, scoring a try within the first two minutes. He followed that up with a penalty at the seven-minute mark and another try shortly after, leaving Fylde reeling at 15-0 inside the opening 10 minutes. Further tries at 12- and 21-minutes compounded Fylde’s struggles, and by then, we were already facing a mountain to climb.
The first 22 minutes saw Fylde concede seven penalties, allowing Macclesfield to maintain momentum and field position. Although we improved our discipline significantly—conceding only two more penalties in the remainder of the match—the early damage was hard to overcome.
Fylde found some rhythm late in the first half, but it was not until the second half and some sustained pressure inside Macclesfield’s 22 that No. 8 Elliott Swann powered over from a driving maul after a well-executed lineout, marking his second try in as many games.
Fullback Will Wyles added to the comeback attempt with a superb solo try just after the halftime whistle, showcasing his pace and agility to break away from the opposition.
The second half saw Macclesfield struggle with discipline, conceding 18 penalties and having two players sent to the sin bin for repeated infringements. Despite this, Fylde were unable to fully capitalize on these opportunities, as handling errors and knock-ons hindered our ability to convert pressure into points.
Credit goes to Macclesfield for their strong start and ability to absorb pressure in the second half. We look forward to welcoming them to the Woodlands for the return fixture on Sunday, 24th November.
With two league games behind us, our focus now shifts to the next challenge: a home fixture against Sale FC on Sunday, 29th September, where we will aim to bounce back and sharpen up our execution.
A big thank you to Macclesfield for their hospitality.
